ABOUT ART THERAPY & Adrienne
Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship. Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.

I am Adrienne M. Johnson, a licensed board-certified art therapist with over twenty-five years of unwavering commitment to my work with families and children. My journey began in the heart of Redhook, Brooklyn, where I dedicated myself to supporting at-risk youth and their families. Upon relocating to the District of Columbia Metro Area, I ventured into the realm of specialized education, providing crucial therapeutic services to severely challenged youth in level 5 programs. Transitioning to a hospice care setting, I extended my compassionate care to children and families navigating the complexities of grief and loss.
For the past nineteen years, I have dedicated myself to supporting the public school system of the District of Columbia, using art therapy to help students, interns, and peers, as well as children from pre-K to the 12th grade. Through gentle guidance, I strive to provide solace and healing to students grappling with trauma, anxiety, and the pain of loss. My inclusive approach aims to support children with diverse needs, including those facing behavioral challenges, autism spectrum disorders, and difficulties in verbal expression.
My deep commitment to every child's well-being embodies the transformative impact of compassion and creativity in therapy. With a nurturing presence and genuine empathy, I create a safe haven where young hearts find healing through art. Through my dedication, I not only touch lives but also instill hope, resilience, and self-discovery in my students, reflecting the profound depth of my compassion and the boundless potential of the human spirit.
